From ages 10 to 17, Gyosai studied at the Surugadei Atelier. Here he is seen kneling before his teacher Kuniyoshi, while Yoshitama, a woman, and the soon to be famous artists Yoshitora, Yoshimune, and Yoshikazu run riot. The text accompaning Gyosai's illustrations was dictated to the novelist Uryu Masayasu.
