Very fine plates drawn and engraved by Frederick W. Smith (1797-1835) and drawn and lithographed by Samuel Holden (fl. 1834-1889). Holden was a brilliant botanical illustrator whose work is well represented at the Victoria and Albert Museum

Joseph Paxton is best known as the designer of the Crystal Palace, built to house the Great Exhibition held in Hyde park in 1851. As leading horticulturist of the day he founded the Magazine of Botany.

BOTANICAL REGISTER started in 1815 by Sydenham Edwards (Wales 1768-1819 Chelsea)

He previously illustrated the Botanical Magazine. He was Illustrator and Publisher and provided
all the illustrations for the first four years. After his death, James Ridgeway published from 1820-1828. In 1829 John Lindley was editor and changed the name to The Botanical Register. He published till 1847 when Sarah Ann Drake retired.

Sarah Ann Drake
(1803-1857)

Victorian botanical artist born in Skeyton, Norfolf, studied art in Paris.
She moved to London and illustrated for the Botanical Register 1829-1847, Lindley's Sertum Orchidacae 1837-1842, Plantae Asisticae Rariores 1830, James Bateman's orchidacae of Mexico and Guatemala.She created well over 1000 illustrations for the Botanical Register alone. She retired in 1847 and returned to Norfolk, married wealthy John Hastings in 1852 and three years later died of diabetes. She was one of the most accomplished artists of all time.
