This is a fine general map of the United States, Canada and Mexico showing the border of the U.S. and Canada according to the 1848 settlement in the Oregon and British Columbia region, Upper California Territory rather than the State of California, Texas incorporated into the Union. Alaska, still Russian Territory. The great real estatedeal was not to take place until 1867.

The vignettes are of interest here. Contemporary curiosity about North American Indians manifests itself in an illustration inspired by the work of the artist George Catlin, also Catherwoods view of an ancient Mexican monument
